"Sacred Connections"

“Sacred Connections” is a project funded by Health Canada to address the issues around Tobacco Cessation and reduction in 5 regions across Alberta.  It involved coordinating 2-day follow-ups with Elders and Community members who participated in the initial 5-day Tobacco Cessation training.  The training included an Aboriginal tobacco cessation model, a culturally modified “Ask, Advise, and Refer” (AAR) model, and a culturally modified Tobacco Reduction and Cessation model (TRAC).  This project further provided assistance in developing community based cessation programs and tracking cessation rates.  Through the many evaluations, many participants felt that the “spark” was back.  By training Staff, Elders, and Community Workers, Nechi and Health Canada are building capacity to increase the cessation efforts and in this process, create more awareness on the harms of commercial tobacco use.
